HOUSE OF MAURICE BARRÈS
The house of Maurice Barrès, today a private property located in Charmes.
Born in Charmes on 19 August 1862, Maurice Barrès was both a writer and a politician, a leading figure in French nationalism. Among other things, he wrote the three volumes of The Cult of the Self that earned him the admiration of youth. His paternal family had actually been established in Lorraine since the 17th century and his grandfather was mayor of Charmes in 1870, so the young man grew up in this village before continuing his studies near Nancy. Maurice Barrès will often return to stay at the family home in Charmes. Today, the residence is private property. However, you can still admire the exterior of the building, marked with a plaque, during your stay in the area.
