MARQUESEE ECOMUSEUM
Authentic Ecomuseum to discover the furnished houses of the former inhabitants in Sabres
Experience a day out of time, at the pace of 19th-century inhabitants on a traditional Landes airial! A train with carriages listed as Historic Monuments, mediators in period costume and demonstrations of traditional skills await you at the Écomusée de Marquèze, a unique site in the heart of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park, created in 1969 and awarded the Musée de France label. After a 4 km train journey through moorland and forest, departing from the old Sabres station, reach Marquèze, an authentic district of the Grande Lande. On this preserved 25-hectare site, discover 19th-century furnished houses, the skills of yesteryear, crops and animals of ancient breeds, the bread oven and its delicacies, the river and its mill... While the children try their hand at old-fashioned games or are surprised by the shepherd-shepherd looking after his sheep, the adults sit down at l'Estanquet or at La Table de Marquèze restaurant to discover local, seasonal produce. At the Pavillon, opposite the Sabres train station, permanent and temporary exhibitions complete this journey through the history of the Landes de Gascogne. In 2025, the Les Associés collective will take over the Pavillon to unveil the 600° exhibition: an artistic look at the fires that ravaged the forest massif in 1949 and 2022. Allow at least half a day to explore the entire site. The ticket includes train travel (return), guided and/or self-guided tours (1h) of the Marquèze district, access to the Pavillon and exhibitions, and participation in local events.

Not only was the place closed with a huge gate stating Private Property, but the gate also cuts access to the greenway (after 120km of amazing cycleways from Hossegor to Mimizan, and Mimizan to Sabres - so not the best way to finish my ride - I thought cycleways were public access !?), so I had to find an alternate route :(
Luckily, the detour only added 1km to Sabres (but on a busy road).
No spontaneous visits, I suggest you call first. If cycling the greenway, plan an alternate route once you reach Marquèze.
