ETIVAL ABBEY
Visit of a remarkable abbey with one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches of the Vosges, in the village of Etival-Clairefontaine.
The town of Étival-Clairefontaine boasts a remarkable Prémontrés abbey on the banks of the Valdange. It was built in the 7th century. The monks settled here in 645, and the abbey remained independent until 1777. It was then bought by the bishopric of Saint-Dié. This is one of the finest Romanesque churches in the Vosges, with a transept dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. Its monumental façade in flamboyant red sandstone is impressive. The abbey is part of the Route des trois abbayes, along with Moyenmoutier and Senones. Tours are led by enthusiastic volunteer guides, but you can also obtain documentation from the Pays des Abbayes tourist office.
