BOURLÉMONT FORT
A fort to watch over the Neufchâteau rail and road junction and slow enemy progress.
Fort de Bourlémont is a Séré de Rivières model fort built between 1878 and 1881. At the time, it was built to keep watch over the Neufchâteau rail and road junction, thus slowing enemy advances through the Charmes gaps. The fort was decommissioned in 1885, as it was considered a second-line position. Today, it remains largely in its original architectural state. The Association des Amis du Fort de Bourlémont (Friends of Bourlémont Fort) has carried out extensive restoration work, and has recently embarked on a new project to turn the fort into an enigma fort: armed with your "enigma pass", set off to discover the site while solving a variety of fauna and flora riddles! It's a fun way to immerse yourself in the life of a 19th-century military organization as you delve into the bowels of the fort.
