THE BALLOON OF ALSACE

Take to the heights at Ballon d'Alsace! This is one of the largest ballons in the Vosges, at 1,250 metres, and undoubtedly one of the department's must-see sites. It offers spectacular views of the Vosges, Alsace, Territoire de Belfort and, on a clear day, the Alps. The Ballon d'Alsace offers calm and serenity. You'll enjoy unspoilt nature: fir forests, mountain lakes, streams of pure water, unforgettable panoramas... In fact, in winter, it's not unusual to find yourself up there in the sun, above a sea of clouds as if on a plane. It's possible, and even highly recommended, to take some lovely walks on the summit. You can climb up to the Joan of Arc statue, for example, to see the Vosges stubble fields in all their splendour. You'll also see a statue dedicated to the deminers who did so much work in the aftermath of the Second World War. It's also a popular spot for bikers and tourist coaches. In winter, you can enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, as well as snowshoe trekking. In summer, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained and get a breath of fresh air in the great outdoors: mountain biking, hiking or paragliding. For those wishing to take up the sport, there is a school offering courses for all levels. Close to the summit, the Maison du tourisme du Ballon d'Alsace will provide you with all the information you need for your stay.
