SANDAUCOURT CASTLE
Renaissance castle, former property of the war heroine Christian Amazon, salons and park to visit
This Renaissance castle, built between 1549 and 1553 certainly by a younger branch of the de Beauvau family, is the former property of the war heroine Amazon Christian, her real name Madame de Saint-Baslemont, during the Thirty Years War. It also welcomed the Cardinal of Retz on many occasions but was mainly passed down from mother to daughter. Before being a pleasure castle with a classical layout, it is first of all a defensive structure as shown by its square plan and its four round towers equipped with loopholes. In the 18th century, the castle underwent modifications. Nowadays, large, high windows line the main facade and a wrought iron balcony can be seen above the entrance gate. In the 20th century, it was transformed into an industrial building. During the summer and on Heritage Days, the castle opens its doors to you. You can visit the salons, the cellars, the park and the chapel.
