ABBAYE DE SENONES
The route of the three abbeys: Etival, Moyenmoutier and Senones
Founded in the 7th century, the three abbeys of Étival, Moyenmoutier and Senones, together with Bonmoutier near Saint-Dié, formed the Sainte Croix des Vosges. As cultural centers, they attracted renowned figures such as Father Hugo, Cardinal Humbert, Voltaire and Dom Calmet. Étival Abbey is Romanesque in style. It did not belong to any diocese, and its monks depended directly on the Pope. Behind its 18th-century facade, it conceals Romanesque architecture typical of southern Lorraine. The baroque-style abbey of Moyenmoutier was founded in 671 by Saint Hydulphe. The monastery was home to one of Europe's first grammar schools, as well as the learned elite of the Benedictine order in the Académie de Moyenmoutier. Senones Abbey was founded in 640 by Gondelbert. Until the French Revolution, it was a powerful and coveted site for kings, counts and bishops. The abbey palace and library date from the 18th century.
