SENONES ABBEY
Benedictine abbey of Senones, founded in 640, with a 12th century bell tower and a superb main staircase.
The Benedictine abbey of Senones was founded in 640. The monastery was renovated by Antoine de Pavie in the 12th century and finally completely rebuilt in the 18th century under the abbatiate of Dom Calmet. The buildings that can still be seen today date from this period, with the exception of the church tower which dates from the 12th century. During the Revolution, the buildings were sold as national property and used as a textile factory until 1993. There is a magnificent grand staircase whose banister was forged in the workshops of Jean Lamour.
