THE CHAPEL OF THE AUGUSTINIANS
Chapel depicting the Adoration of the Magi, with gilded wooden reliquaries and a beautiful carved wooden altarpiece.
The construction of this religious building, built on land that once belonged to the Augustinians, dates back to the 14th century. The Augustinian chapel, known as the "Penitents' church", which for a long time served as an annex to the church of Marnhac (access via the door in the rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville), contains gilded wooden reliquaries, a pietà, and above all a very beautiful 16th century sculpted wooden altarpiece, a masterpiece of flamboyant gothic art attributed to a workshop in Antwerp. It represents the adoration of the Magi in the centre, the circumcision and the presentation in the temple on the two painted panels... The stone pavement has engravings symbolising the trades: a tailor's chisel, a blacksmith's hammer and anvil. On the ceiling, the keystones are decorated with noble coats of arms. To the left of the side entrance door, a nativity is due to the half-Nabis, half-Classical style of the Aveyron painter and sculptor Casimir Serpantié. On the facade, a contemporary stained glass window of great delicacy was created by a glass craftsman installed in Saint-Geniez. The building was confiscated from the Church during the Revolution, then finally returned to worship in 1805. The tourist office of Causses to Aubrac organizes visits for groups throughout the year. Individuals can discover the building in July and August during the guided tours of the city, which will also lead them to other remarkable buildings in the city.
