GUSTAVE MOREAU'S WAY OF THE CROSS
Church that houses a priceless treasure in Decazeville, on the Stations of the Cross by Gustave Moreau
The 19th century church of Notre-Dame de Decazeville is home to a priceless treasure: a series of 14 canvases representing the Way of the Cross painted by Gustave Moreau in 1863. Fixed at a height of 3 metres, this Stations of the Cross had fallen into oblivion before Gilbert Bou discovered it in 1964 and pointed it out to Jean Paladilhe, curator of the Gustave Moreau Museum in Paris, who carried out research to certify the authenticity of the work before its classification as a historical monument in 1965.
