SAINT-IZAIRE CASTLE
14th century castle, summer residence of the bishops of Vabres-l'Abbaye, inner courtyard and wine press room for weddings
A vast, massive, rectangular building built of red sandstone in the 14th century, the castle was much more austere in the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, its appearance and geographical position made it the summer residence of the bishops of Vabres-l'Abbaye. The visit begins with the inner courtyard and the press room, both of which are used for weddings and receptions. You will then discover the rooms that have been fitted out: a classroom, an old-fashioned kitchen, and then, in what is the Bishops' room, a superb Louis XIII French ceiling.
