The town has retained the authenticity of a medieval village.
Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, which was saved (an area of refuge created around a church and marked by several milestones) since the 11th century, was subsequently established as a Bastide (or new town) in the 13th century to cope with the demographic growth that plagued the region in the Middle Ages. The city has retained, therefore, the authenticity of a medieval town. Note that the church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul houses exceptional 14th century Jacobean paintings, relating the legend of the "hanged man".
