CATHEDRAL TREASURY MUSEUM
Cathedral treasure museum featuring religious art objects, including paintings, sculptures and devotionals.
The treasure of Auch Cathedral is kept in an impregnable fortress, the Tour d'Armagnac. At 40 meters high, it is nothing less than the former prison of the bishopric. Former dungeons have been opened to visitors to complete the discovery of the treasure's collections. Over 200 objects of religious art have been brought together in 300 m² of converted space. Over and above their usefulness in the practice of worship or their expression of religious devotion, the paintings, sculptures and goldsmith's and silversmith's pieces are showcased as genuine works of art. The treasure is presented in the lower rooms of the former chanoinie, the remains of the original 11th-century church and the lower part of the Armagnac tower, which can be visited in the same way as the works on display. The monumental fireplace adorned with coats of arms, the columns with capitals and the oak beams all attract attention. This exhibition space, which also serves as an interpretation center for the cathedral's history and architecture, also features the buildings of the former ecclesiastical court, its courtrooms, the remains of the chapter house and, of course, the famous dungeons, including one built into a 7.8 m-thick wall! On site, videos, tablets and interactive terminals allow you to discover this heritage site and all the restoration work that has been carried out. Applications to assist your visit are also available for download.
