WASHINGTON
One of the oldest wash houses in the department, with an exceptional structure with benches running the entire length
This large washhouse was built in 1867 with the materials recovered from the old market hall and is fed by the stream of Jarras. The chore was called "la bugade", the dirty linen was first rubbed with Marseille soap, while the hot water was boiled in the big chimneys. The wash house is one of the oldest in the department and its structure remains exceptional with its benches running the length of the house. In winter, the place was used as a shelter for the itinerant "bouilleur de cru" (distiller) who came to distil armagnac for the local farmers.
