COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE DE LA ROMIEU
Visit the Collégiale Saint-Pierre de La Romieu, the fruit of Arnaud d'Aux's project.
This splendid building, listed as a historic monument and a Unesco World Heritage Site, is undoubtedly one of the finest in the Gers. With its square and octagonal towers, its 14th-century magnificence stands out in the center of the village with absolute splendor. The collegiate church was the brainchild of Arnaud d'Aux, a native of the village, son of a wealthy lord who went on to become an influential cardinal in the papal court of Clement V. In 1314, as private consul to King Edward II of England, he undertook the construction of this heritage jewel. A cloister, featuring carved Romanesque capitals, was added in 1320. The north entrance leads directly into the church, but the main entrance to this ensemble of southern architecture is via the tourist office. An incredible sight awaits you, worthy of a journey out of time. The arches, sculptures, painted walls and vaulted ceilings of the single-nave church, the climb to the bell tower and its two octagonal towers, one of which contains a secret passage with a double-revolution staircase, are all absolutely masterful. As you wind your way upstairs, you can admire the restored frescoes in the sacristy, which were previously only visible behind a grille. The parapet walk and gardens remain mysterious, filled with an aura of history that makes you shudder. The view from the summit, all the way to the horizon, is exceptional.
