Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church and Saint-Pierre church, two remarkable religious buildings to discover in Bouglon.
Bouglon, a vast commune scattered over numerous hamlets, is home to several religious buildings, including two churches.
The parish church, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption or Saint-Etienne de Bouglon, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and has been extensively modified over the centuries. Located in the heart of the village, this rectangular edifice is 22 m long and 10 m wide, with a five-sided chevet. Its ogival portal, set back from the street, is typical of Gothic art. Its sculpted ornamentation has deteriorated. The slate-roofed bell tower houses a single 400 kg bell. The interior vaulting is modern.
The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre is located in the hamlet of Bouglon-Vieux. It dates back to the 12th century and has undergone very few modifications over the centuries. This is a remarkable building. The church's round-arched openings are characteristic of the Romanesque style. The Saint-Pierre de Bouglon-Vieux church is distinguished by its sober entrance portal, whose only ornamentation consists of a series of projections, sheltered by a canopy supported by hexagonal pillars. The barrel-vaulted apse, housing the choir, is narrower than the nave. Symbolically separating the choir from the rest of the building are four half-columns whose capitals are either bare or decorated with a row of foliage. The fully panelled nave is also remarkable.
