FONTAINE DIANE
Fountain hidden under the city walls, a vast vaulted basin with a double ogival opening closed by a grid
The fountain, a 13th century work classified as a historical monument, is hidden under the ramparts. It is actually a vast vaulted basin, with an opening in double ogival arch closed by a wrought iron gate. The walls of the fountain were decorated with murals, which can hardly be seen today. It is probable that the fountain was dedicated to a deity in ancient times, and that a temple of Jupiter was built above it. François-Paul Alibert, who accompanied André Gide during his visit in 1907, dedicated a poem to it, À la source Fontélie.
