MAQUIS DE MEILHAN MONUMENT
A large sculpted fresco recalls the heroic sacrifice of the maquisards
The maquis of Meilhan gathered about a hundred resistance fighters. On July 7, 1944, they were attacked by a detachment of the Wehrmacht. A car exploded, the fight raged and the enemies killed the wounded. Only 16 resistance fighters managed to escape the massacre. 76 graves are lined up in this memorial erected in 1948. A large sculpted fresco recalls the heroic sacrifice of the maquisards, while the carcass of the car and the ruins of the buildings add to the emotion.
