THE MACELLUM

Formed by a 500 m2 ground floor courtyard of black and white mosaics, this covered market was one of the largest in Roman Gaul. Surrounded by twenty-six shops, it was the place where the inhabitants of Lugdunum were supplied with food from the first century onwards. The theatre, now very degraded, was built on the slope of the hill. It could accommodate about 2,000 spectators. The early Christian basilica, built in the 5th century, is located in the gardens of a domus of the High Empire. There are many indications that it survived the displacement of the town from the plain to the hill of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. Twenty-six sarcophagi were discovered here, they are dated from the 5th to the 8th century.
