The most important monument in Saint-Gaudens, a church with a remarkable collection of Romanesque sculptures.

The collegiate church of Saint-Pierre, placed on the roads to Compostela, is the most important monument of your stage in Saint-Gaudens. Its history is an invitation to travel... in time. If the presence of a religious community is attested in Saint-Gaudens since the 9th century, it is only in the 11th century that the construction of this complex began, probably finished between 1130 and 1150. After the construction of the church dedicated to Saint Peter, followed that of the cloister (1160-1180) and the chapter house. The eastern and southern parts of the cloister were added in the 13th century. Considered as the most important Romanesque building of Comminges, the church presents a remarkable set of Romanesque sculptures of the 11th and 12th centuries.

Plundered and burned by the Huguenots in 1569, the church was restored in the 19th century. It is from this period that the present imposing bell tower dates. The cloister, such as it is today, is the result of a meticulous reconstitution carried out in 1987 from archival drawings and preserved remains. Take the time to stroll under its arcades, to observe the decoration of the capitals, to see the ochre stone illuminated by the sun...

The most interesting capitals are located in the sanctuary. The organ, the work of Dominique Cavaillé-Coll, was classified as a historical monument in 1971. One can also admire two tapestries that were woven at the royal Aubusson factory during the second half of the 18th century.
