CAPITOL DUNGEON
Le donjon du Cap celebrates its 500th anniversary! This handsome brick edifice was used to store gunpowder and municipal archives
The so-called Capitoline Keep was once the Tower of the Consistory, the city's council of consuls. Erected in 1525, it stood at the heart of the old town hall. Until 1946, this handsome brick edifice was also used to store gunpowder and protect the municipal archives. When it was restored in the 19th century, Viollet-le-Duc gave it the appearance of a Nordic belfry by adding a slate roof! Beautiful Gothic vaulted ceilings can be seen inside the building, which houses a tourist office information point and a store.
