A strange sphere housing a giant 1-million-volt electron microscope in Toulouse.
A strange silver sphere springs up in the center of a bare lawn. For a moment, one imagines a science-fiction novel. Almost! You're at CEMES: Centre d'Élaboration de Matériaux et d'Études Structurales. The steel sphere, 25 m in diameter, was inaugurated in 1959 by General de Gaulle. It houses a giant 1 million volt electron microscope! You're sure to be impressed by the huge generator at its center. An extraordinary example of twentieth-century heritage. Artists in residence at the CNRS laboratory regularly exhibit their work in collaboration with the Musée des Abattoirs. A unique venue.
