Museum of Contemporary Art: rich collection of over 3,500 works, mainly from the second half of the century.
The Musée des Abattoirs, which has been awarded the title of Musée de France, is dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. It occupies the former industrial site of the municipal slaughterhouses of the city. Built in the Saint-Cyprien district outside the city walls between 1828 and 1832, on the plans of the young Toulouse architect Urbain Vitry, they met the expectations of this century of urban transformation, struck by modernization and the desire for hygiene. They ceased all activity in 1988. Entirely rehabilitated by the architects Antoine Stinco and Rémi Papillaut, it manages both the city's collections and those of the FRAC Occitanie-Méditerranée, i.e. about 3,500 works by 950 different artists.
Among the major pieces, the stage curtain entitled La Dépouille du Minotaure en costume d'Arlequin (13 m x 8 m) painted in 1936 by Pablo Picasso and Luis Fernandez for the mise au carreau (visible 6 months a year because of its fragility, according to the exhibitions of the moment). Made in the context of the Popular Front for the play written by Romain Rolland Le Quatorze juillet.
