FILIÈRE CHIA DE FRANCE
Chia is a plant of the sage family. Originally from Mexico, it was already cultivated by the Aztecs who attributed many virtues to it. Today, according to FAO, world production of this seed exceeds 80,000 tons annually. The Chia de France sector, created in June 2017, has therefore set itself the task of supporting and promoting French cultures, in order to offer an alternative to chia imported from Central America.
Panam Semences, based in Villemur-sur-Tarn, has developed the first variety of chia adapted to the temperate hexagonal climate. Called "Oruro", it has already been sown by about a hundred farmers in the South-West region, with the objective of developing a tricolour sector, but above all a reasoned and local sector. The stakes are also food. Chia is rich in omega-3, an essential element for the proper functioning of the human body, which is often lacking in Western cuisine.
