The Hautes-Pyrenees served as a haven for many characters throughout history. Hidden in the Cauterets Valley, Hostellerie de la Reine Hortense bears the name of one of its most famous hosts: in the eighteenth century, the queen of Napoleon and mother of Napoleon III came to take the waters in Cauterets would have slept a night of thunderstorm.
