CARTHUSIAN FOUNTAIN
An archaeological site of Roman origin, the fountain which has supplied the city of Cahors with drinking water since the middle of the 19th century
The Fontaine des Chartreux is an archaeological site of Roman origin, located along the Lot river. This Vauclusian-type resurgence was a place of devotion for the Cadourques, dedicated to Divona, the water goddess of Celtic origin, to whom Cahors owes its name (Divona Cadurcorum). In the Middle Ages, a mill was built here, then handed over to the Carthusian monks. Since the mid-19th century, the river has supplied drinking water to the town of Cahors. Part of its underground bed has been explored by divers, who have discovered almost a thousand Gallo-Roman coins.
