The château retains some of its original troglodyte rooms, served by a stone staircase built in the Romanesque period.
Built and excavated in the 12th century on a rocky spur, the castle consolidated the power of the Holy German Empire. Altered several times, it has preserved from the Romanesque period a series of galleries and troglodytic features, as well as an ingenious system for channelling and storing rainwater, which is distributed to all levels by a freight elevator. To keep the fief united, two branches of the family lived here together in the 16th century, the heyday of the château, which consisted of several buildings. French troops ruined it in the 17th century.
