Rocamadour is a medieval town known the world over for its beauty and its location, clinging to the cliffs
Rocamadour is a medieval town known throughout the world for its beauty and its extraordinary location, clinging to the cliffs: the houses, chapels and other buildings seem to be piled on top of each other. The city's history is just as impressive as its layout, where its castle and ramparts were at the forefront. Of the 14th century fort that was erected to protect the town, there are still vestiges that show its grandeur. Rocamadour has been a place of spiritual pilgrimage for more than a thousand years: miracles are said to have been performed there, so it was essential to protect the sanctuary. The ramparts overhanging the castle of Rocamadour, at the very top of the village, forbade access to the city from the top of the cliff. Between heaven and earth, the view from the ramparts has offered a unique panorama of the site, the Alzou valley and the canyon for centuries: beware, you will certainly be impressed. Walking along the ramparts, you can feel the history and imagine the scenes that took place there. In July and August, guided night tours of the sanctuaries are offered to make the journey all the more emotional. It would not be surprising to see a knight in armor appear on his steed! The descent to the city is made either by an elevator or by the way of the cross, which is also worth a visit: in spite of its name, when you take it to go back down, it is very pleasant to walk there.
