SAINTE-MARIE ABBEY
Visit to discover a fortified abbey with a parish church classified as a historical monument in Souillac.
Legend has it that the abbey was founded by Saint Eloi, Dagobert's minister in the 7th century. However, its existence is not known until the 10th century. The present church was built between 1075 and 1150. After a period of prosperity, the first decline occurred during the Hundred Years' War. The monastic buildings were destroyed in 1573. In 1790, the monks were expelled, and the abbey was sold and abandoned. In 1803, the abbey became a parish church, and in 1840 was classified as a historic monument. Today, it is the subject of a major restoration project.
