This site is an ancient stronghold, home to the Ricard gate, named after the man who built it.
As an ancient stronghold, Penne "la sanglante" was not easily taken. In addition to a difficult access by steep slopes, the city was equipped with ramparts and doors. 3 of the 6 original gates are still visible today. To the south of the village, the Porte de la Ville is located on Place Gambetta. The Porte de Ferracap, to the north, was where the condemned were exposed. Finally, admire the Ricard Gate a little further down, whose name comes from the fact that Richard the Lionheart built a castle here. It is the best preserved of the three, and also the smallest.
