THE CASTRES PRISON
The prison of Castres whose first function was to receive the deserters of the Napoleonic army
Built in 1812, the first function of the Castres prison was to receive deserters from the Napoleonic army. Spanish Republicans, resistance fighters, communists, homosexuals, anti-socials and anti-fascists were also incarcerated there between 1941 and 1943, under the Vichy regime. For many of them, it was the antechamber to the hell of the concentration camps. In September 1943, a collective escape allowed thirty-six political prisoners to regain their freedom. Nowadays, the prison has been converted into a leisure centre.
