At the very end of rue Tolosane, at the level of boulevard des Lices, one of the city's ten former gates remains: the Tolosane gate. The city walls were demolished in 1629, on the orders of Louis XIII, the king feared that Castres would become a Protestant stronghold. On either side of the door are two follies, ornamental and prestigious pavilions built in the 19th century in the gardens of rich residences. Boulevard des Lices is the result of filling in the city's ditches.
