CASTELFRANC CASTLE
Castle of Castelfranc private in Montredon-Labessonnié, with the first observatory of astronomy in France
This 16th century castle is named after Guillaume de Nautonnier de Castelfranc, King Henry IV's geographer and astronomer. He created the first astronomy observatory in France here, on the site of the Château de Castelfranc. It is to him that we owe the method of the magnetized compass, which allows us to measure latitude and longitude. The site can only be visited from the outside, as it is now a private property. As for the astronomy enthusiasts, go to the observatory, route de Lacaune, for even more discoveries.
