ST. JAMES CHURCH
Typical Southern Gothic church, topped by an octagonal bell tower of Toulousian type in Montauban
Founded in the middle of the 12th century and rebuilt in the following century by the bourgeois of Montalban in atonement for their sympathy for the Cathars. The church has a single nave and is typical of the Southern Gothic style, topped by an octagonal bell tower of the Toulouse type. Inside, the stucco and marble altarpiece was made by Ingres Père towards the end of the 18th century. Its history was very eventful: transformed into a fortress during the Wars of Religion, it bears the scars of the siege of Montauban. Then from 1630 to 1739 it was the cathedral of Montauban.
