BIRTHPLACE OF LAMOTHE-CADILLAC
Birthplace of Antoine Laumet de Lamothe-Cadillac, known in the United States as the founder of the city of Detroit
Antoine Laumet de Lamothe-Cadillac, born in 1658 in Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave, is known in the United States as the founder of the city of Detroit. The house where he was born has been transformed into a museum that perpetuates the forgotten memory of this Gascon "scrap metal worker" and adventurer. The name Cadillac is known throughout the world, since it was taken up by Henry Martin Leland when he founded his famous car company in Detroit in 1902, in homage to the founder of the city two centuries earlier.
