THE GERMAN CEMETERY IN ANNOEULLIN
Among the German military cemeteries scattered in the region, that of Annoeullin has the particularity of welcoming the tomb of an ace of British aviation, Albert Ball. With 44 victories, he crashed into a field on May 7, 1917 near Annoeullin, after a battle against Lothar von Richthofen, brother of the Red Baron. He was 20 years old. He was buried with military honours in the German military cemetery. Its grave lies particularly in the midst of the austere Germanic crosses that mark the graves of 6 113 German soldiers and three Russian prisoners of war. German military cemeteries testify to German ancient Germanic culture where the forces of nature are highlighted by the presence of many trees, hard grass, wild flowers and sometimes rivers.
