The slag heap from this mine was first used to provide fill for highways
One of the most productive pits of the former Compagnie des mines d'Anzin, from which nearly 8.83 million tons of coal were mined. Closed in 1935, the slag heap from this mine was first used to provide backfill for highways. Then, as nature took over, it was classified as a ZNIEFF (Zone Naturelle d'Intérêt Ecologique, Faunistique et Floristique) before being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The view from the top is superb!
