ST. JOHN'S BASTION
This bastion located in the southeast of the city against a rocky spur can be visited as a beautiful page of the city's history.
The bastion is an integral part of the fortifications dating from before the actual expansion of the town of Avesnes-sur-Helpe. Situated to the south-east of the town against a rocky spur, Bastion No. 6, known as the Bastion Saint-Jean, owes its name to the tower located near the Saint-Jean chapel. In the middle of the 19th century, the decision was taken to remove it. Fortunately, it was saved (and renovated in 1999!) by being listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments. Today it can be visited as a beautiful page of the history of the city.
