MUSEUM OF MARBLE AND BLUE STONE
Museum retracing the geological and human adventure of the marble industry and the exploitation of the Avesnois quarries.
This museum was created in 1979. It traces the geological and human adventure of the marble industry and the exploitation of Avesnois quarries from the 19th century to the present day. Located in an old marble factory built on the banks of the Hogneau, it houses an important collection of fireplaces, clocks (over a hundred!), sculptures, a collection of tools from before machinism and marble works. The period archives evoke the life of the marble factories and the hard work of the workers. Throughout the 19th century, Bellignies built an international reputation and a prosperous economy thanks to marble. In addition, on reservation, it is possible to learn the techniques of engraving, inlaying, fake marble, fossils on blue stone.
