SADDLE CASTLE

The castle was used as a watchtower for the Selles gate and the Scheldt, as a military hospital, and its underground tunnels were used as a prison.
Originally, the castle of Selles had a function of surveillance of the gate of Selles and the Scheldt, but it was also a symbol of the power of the count-bishop on the city. Its underground passages were used as a prison (the engravings of the prisoners that remain testify to this), and the castle as a military hospital. Today, it houses the court and thus retains its link with justice. In the past, it was easy to visit its underground passages, but this is no longer possible due to erosion, except on certain occasions with the tourist office.
