ARSENAL AND MEDIEVAL ENCLOSURE
Old castle with 250 m of walls in Condé-sur-l'Escaut, result of a real engineering and architectural feat.
The old castle, named arsenal after the capture of Condé by Louis XIV in 1676, was built in 1147, demolished in 1174 in reprisal by Baudouin V and rebuilt by the latter in 1184. About 250 meters of walls still surround the city, combining foundations of the classical Middle Ages and bastions of the Renaissance. This is a real feat of engineering and architecture, given the large area of marshland that crosses the Scaldian city from one side to the other.
