VULTURES DOOR
Porte Vautourneux, located at one of the main entrances of Condé-sur-l'Escaut, a site full of history.
Rebuilt in 1707, it replaced a much older gate, the Rombault Gate, part of the 12th century medieval enclosure. It was by climbing this gate that the Belgian Huguenots entered the town in the 15th century, sacking it and scattering the relics of Saint Wasnon. The Vautourneux Gate has a slightly less eventful history. Located at one of the main entrances to the city, it was at the time of its construction a shelter for travellers passing through, in the purest tradition of the picturesque inns of yesteryear.
