BELL CITY
A slightly off-center city that holds a special place in the social and cultural memory of the city of Douai.
A little out of the way, the Cité de la Clochette, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2012, holds a special place in the social and cultural memory of the city. Its unusual name would refer to a medieval tower built east of the city in the 15th century. After the First World War, the mines called for foreign workers, mostly Polish. The Cité de la Clochette was built between 1925 and 1927 to accommodate them. Built on the model of garden cities, it offers architectural fantasy and greenery.
