ST. ELOI CHURCH
A church with the presence of a sanctuary, with several architectural styles, and belfries classified as world heritage.
Having a church named Saint-Éloi in Dunkirk makes sense in a steel city. The origins of the church are rather uncertain, even if there are accounts of the presence of a sanctuary established in the Merovingian period. The church has known several styles of architecture over the centuries, wars, looting, fires and bombardments. The Saint-Éloi peristyle, which is mentioned in a carnival song and which still existed in the 19th century, has completely disappeared! In its primitive form, it remains the belfry that is located... across the street! It was classified in 1840 as a historical monument. It has also joined the list of belfries classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Saint-Éloi church, made of bricks and white stone, nicknamed the cathedral of sands, was classified as a historical monument in 1916. But it will suffer from both the First and Second World Wars. Its facade still bears many bullet holes that were preserved during its restoration. It is in this church that the local hero Jean Bart and his family are buried. We can only advise you too much to go and observe it, almost at a steep angle, from the top of the belfry of Saint-Éloi.
