LEUGHENAER TOWER
The tower dominating the old fishing port is the oldest building in Dunkirk and belonged to the famous Burgundian ramparts.
Raised at the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Leughenaer Tower dominates the old fishing port at the top of its 30 m. It is the oldest building in Dunkerque that was built in 1405. The tower belonged to the famous burgundy walls of which it is the only vestige. Located in the channel axis, it served as the basis for the first lighthouse used from 1793; a lantern was added in 1814. It is also called the «Tower of the Liar»; this name would come from its misleading role, which, it seems, was to attract the ships by its misleading lights to fail. And pillage them. The originality of this tower is its octagonal shape. She's on the Minck. Place adjacent to the old fishing port. The old Halle of the Minck disappeared during the May/June 1940 bombing, but fresh fish are still being sold at the foot of the tower. A symbol of Dunkirk's port and maritime activity, the tower of the Leughenaer has been classified as a historic monument since 1995. It houses an association on the ground floor but does not visit, except during Heritage Days.
