La plaine au bois, a place that is located in Esquelbecq.
The Plaine au Bois Memorial vividly evokes one of the greatest war crimes committed on French soil during the Second World War. On May 28, 1940, a hundred British soldiers were assigned to delay the advance of German troops during Operation Dynamo in Dunkirk. The British held out for 9 hours before surrendering. The 70 survivors were taken prisoner and locked up in a barn before being massacred. A lookout point, an orientation table and a stele allow us to better imagine this sad episode.
