THE BUILDING
Belfry topped by a lantern, now home to the city's last bell and its three chimes.
In the 17th century, when the belfry was being built, the Italian Renaissance was making its mark throughout Europe. With its emphasis on horizontality, the Renaissance was by definition opposed to the grandiose verticality of northern belfries. This explains why this belfry is "only" 27 meters high. It is topped by a lantern, which today houses the city's last bell and its three chimes. Its originality earned it Unesco World Heritage status in 2005! It is only accessible on certain days.
