THE WOOD DOLMEN
A Neolithic tombstone in Hemel, listed as a Monument Historique in 1887.
Built in sandstone, this sepulchral stone dating from the Neolithic period was badly damaged during the 19th century. The natural monument was reconstituted with the means at hand and according to historical descriptions. The monument was originally (around the 3rd century B.C.) made up of six enormous stones that formed a cave 5 meters long and 1.30 meters wide. The dolmen of Hamel was classified as a historical monument in 1887. Considered then as a magical place, the spring that shelters the site of the dolmen was named "The Kitchen of the Fairies"!
