The Battery of Zuydcoote is built in yellow bricks, which allows it to blend perfectly into the dunes.

Built in 1878, as an annex to the Fort des Dunes, its role was to protect Dunkirk from any attack coming from the East by sea and to watch over the passage to Zuydcoote. Like the Fort des Dunes, this one, also called "batterie de l'Est", was built in yellow bricks, which allowed it to blend in perfectly with the dunes. It was later completed with reinforced concrete buildings. First used by the Allies, it was quickly taken over by the Germans who integrated it into their coastal defense system, the Atlantic Wall.
