FORMER ALDERMAN

A former alderman's residence with remarkable domed towers, a true artistic gem in the taste of the Flemish Renaissance.
Designed by Nicolas Du Bois, the échevinage was also called priory because it was located next to the apartments of the prior. It was the seat of the magistrate, composed of the mayor and his aldermen, and also included the courtrooms and the prisons. It is a real artistic jewel in the taste of the Flemish Renaissance, with its domed towers and its sandstone facade. The first floor contained the prisons, with tiny openings overlooking the Grand Place. On the second floor, one can admire paintings by Louis Watteau.
